Recognize and Replace Idols of the Heart
Christ alone should occupy the throne of our heart. All desires should be submitted under the lordship of Christ. There are good desires, such as Jesus’ desire for his disciples to pray with him, but even a good thing becomes an idol if it overtakes the heart.
1. Recognize and Repent
A desire becomes a demand when it takes on a sense of entitlement. That demand needs to be nipped in the bud as soon as it sprouts.
2. Refocus on God
There is one answer: refocus on God, his presence, and his promises.
3. Replace the Idolatrous Response
Replace it with prayer, self-control, patience, godly conflict-resolution skills, and godly character.
Questions That Reveal a Ruling Desire
- “I must have ______ to live a meaningful life.”
- “What I think I need or desperately want is ______.”
- “You must give me ______, or I’ll be angry at you or cold toward you.”
- “If only ______ would change, I would be satisfied or content.”
- “If I don’t get ______, then I become depressed, angry, or anxious.”
For a biblical view of needs, study 2 Peter 1:3; Luke 10:38–42; Psalms 27 and 73:23–28; and Matthew 4:4.
