15 Evidences of a True Christian

Marks of new life from the letter of 1 John

By Matthew Steven Black3 pages in the original

Marks of the New Birth

The central point of 1 John is that believers can recognize certain evidences of the new birth. John Piper summarizes the letter’s purpose this way: “At the heart of his reason for writing is the desire to help them know they are born again—that they now have new spiritual life. Eternal life.” These marks are evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work—God’s fingerprints on our lives.

Are God’s Fingerprints Evident in Your Life?

These marks do not earn salvation. They show the kind of life God produces in those who have been born again.

Evidences 1–5

1. Fellowship with God

Every Christian has a spiritual hunger for God’s holy presence. Looking to Jesus through prayer and the Word becomes a source of fellowship and joy.

“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” — 1 John 1:3–4, ESV

2. No Longer Comfortable Living in Sin

If spiritual intimacy is food for the Christian, sin is like a cancer. A child of God cannot remain content in a settled pattern of sin but wants it exposed and removed.

“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” — 1 John 1:6, ESV
“No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.” — 1 John 3:9, ESV
“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.” — 1 John 5:18, ESV

3. Obedience from the Heart

Feelings and circumstances change. True Christians choose to glorify God and obey him even when obedience is difficult.

“And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.” — 1 John 2:3, ESV
“If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.” — 1 John 2:29, ESV

4. Hunger for God’s Word

True Christians hunger for God and his Word as a newborn baby craves milk (1 Peter 2:2–3). Before salvation, that interest may be passing; after the new birth, the appetite becomes a continuing part of life.

“I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” — 1 John 2:14, ESV

5. Separation from the World

A believer no longer lives to worship the world’s pleasures, possessions, and pride. The world offers a false happiness; lasting joy is found in fellowship with Christ.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” — 1 John 2:15–17, ESV
“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” — 1 John 5:4, ESV

D. L. Moody observed that friendship with Christ and friendship with a world that hates Christ cannot rule the heart at the same time. Universal approval is not the measure of faithfulness.

Evidences 6–10

6. Boldly Confessing Christ

True Christians openly confess that Jesus Christ is the only Savior. Belief in Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ produces a desire to identify with him before others.

“No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.” — 1 John 2:23, ESV
“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 10:32–33, ESV

7. Longing for Christ’s Return

The child of God knows that one day we will see Jesus and be made like him. Christians use God’s gifts with gratitude, but their deepest hope is not in fashion, entertainment, technology, employment, or any passing opportunity. Their hope is fixed on Christ’s return, and that hope has a purifying effect.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.” — 1 John 3:1–3, ESV

8. Willingness to Be Rejected for Faith

Every Christian should expect that a new pattern of life will sometimes be rejected by the world. The apostle John says this should not surprise us.

“Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.” — 1 John 3:13, ESV
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” — John 15:18, ESV

9. Love for Fellow Christians

Christians are called to share life and serve one another. Love for fellow believers is one of the clearest marks of Christ’s transforming work.

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” — John 13:35, ESV
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” — 1 John 4:7, ESV
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.” — 1 John 5:1, ESV
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:7, ESV

10. Confidence in Answered Prayer

A person who has been born again enjoys union and fellowship with the Lord. The indwelling Spirit moves the Christian to pray rather than surrender to fear during trials.

“Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.” — 1 John 3:21–22, ESV

Evidences 11–15

11. Discernment Through the Bible

True believers receive God-given discernment to recognize false teaching, especially error about who Jesus is and what he accomplished on the cross. The Bible—not feelings, trends, or popularity—sets the standard for truth and practice.

“We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” — 1 John 4:6, ESV

12. The Comfort and Conviction of the Holy Spirit

“By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” — 1 John 4:13, ESV

Through the Spirit of God we believe and repent. He gives us a new heart and spirit (Ezekiel 36:26–27), and Christ’s presence within us brings the assurance that God will not leave or forsake his people (Hebrews 13:5).

13. Trusting Jesus Christ as King

Believing in Jesus means trusting him as King to direct our thoughts and actions. Saving faith is more than intellectual agreement; it surrenders to Jesus as the Christ, the Anointed One.

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.” — 1 John 5:1, ESV

14. Persevering in Victory over the World

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” — 1 John 5:4, ESV

A Christian perseveres in love and holiness because the Holy Spirit lives within. A justified person may fall, but by God’s grace he or she gets back up and continues.

15. Assurance of Salvation

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” — 1 John 5:13, ESV

Sound doctrine is not the final goal; it is the pathway to knowing Christ, who is eternal life. Those who walk with God through Christ gain the settled assurance that they are God’s children and that he will never forsake them.

What These Evidences Mean

These Evidences Do Not Save Us

No Christian displays every mark perfectly, but these marks describe the holiness every Christian longs for. They do not make us God’s children; they show that we are God’s children. A child does nothing to earn a family resemblance. Physical birth is a gift, and new birth into God’s family is also a gift from God.

“For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” — Titus 3:3–7, KJV

If these marks are missing, do not look to yourself for salvation. Look to Jesus Christ alone. His payment for sin is complete. Turn to him, and he will transform you into the person he intends you to be.
